NICKNAME : Amongst the few and close, she goes by the more casual Artie and colleagues have acknowledged and introduced her as Art.
ALIAS : Aetole (Second Gen)
AGE : 39 years
BIRTHDATE : June 25th, 1939
APPEARANCE : Standing tall at 5’10, Artemis weighs in at a 165 lbs exactly. She has a boyish figure with narrow hips and wide shoulders with most of her height coming from her long legs. Though hardly ever seen, her arms and legs are defined by muscle from having an active lifestyle. Her eyes are hazel leaning towards green and often appear a shade darker or lighter depending on what she wears. Her gaze is mournful and magnetic that would better suit a wolf and she’s dubbed them as her own personal mood stones, giving away everything. Her hair is a deep earthy brown with hints of burgundy and auburn, gray has begun to set in leaving faints steaks of it along her temple and brow. She takes good care of it though split ends are her nemesis that will never go away. Artemis has a large forehead and uses her long bangs to cover it while the rest of her long hair is usually worn loose and styled.
Small almond shaped eyes that are set a little too far apart giving her nose a elongated look and a square jaw line. To the casual observer she has a small crescent shaped scar on the inside of her left forearm. Small nearly undefined cheekbones giving her face a rounded look with the presence of baby fat. She has her father to thank for the wide mouth with lips she’s never quite sure what to do with. Her hands match her overall body with long and slender fingers but raised veins and visible tendons reveal them to be working hands. Her olive skin tone comes from her mother’s side of the family. Without a doubt, no one can mistake the Greek blood in her. Everything about her speaks of a queenly manner and she conducts herself of nothing less then the regality of a warrior. Very little seems to disturb the icy stare or the disdainful smile she adorns, rarely is she a woman of easy amusement. She watches with the eyes of a predator biding her time before she pounces. Beneath the clothes and makeup more scars are hidden, a simple clean scar made by a knife across her left temple that fades into her hair line and the more obtrusive and significant gouges across her forearms, hands and abdomen. Several smaller scars have simply faded with time. Artemis’ skin is free of tattoos though her ears are pierced once, she has no other body modifications.
ATTIRE : For one whose job and title count on appearances, Artemis is not that concerned with what she wears. She relies on her maid and good friend Winifred to keep her in the proper fashions. Traditionally during work hours she wears straight heavy wool skirts in shades of muted browns and blues that never fall above her knees and never below the middle of her calf with tailored white blouses. Over this she wears a single breasted suit jacket either a navy blue or a deep grey, sheer pantyhose which she rarely goes without and navy blue or black dress shoes with a small heel. When she is not in her work clothes, she opts for comfort over style. Jeans and plain colored t-shirts are her preferred favorite with sneakers and maybe a jean jacket thrown on if it’s cold. When parties and other events arise, Art begrudgingly exchanges the straight skirts and jeans for elegant dresses and heels. This is where Winifred shines in maintaining the women of the Davon lineage with grace and elegance. The only constant attire is a thin gold chain necklace with a mother of pearl crescent moon pendant, it was her mothers passed down to her.
For those that knew her first incarnation as Aetole, remember the young girl in chain mail, white tunic and matching boots with a bow and arrow set that belonged more in a fantasy then real life. Today, Aetole has exchanged her sparkly white mask and moon emblem belt for a full body suit of light weight armor and leather. Made from a tentatively named product called “Spiderfiber” it is an ongoing private project of Artemis that introduces the idea of the strength of spider silk scaled up to human size. It can be sewn like regular thread or molded into various shapes by intense pressure and heat and once cooled, retain its shape and remains light weight. It’s been tested so far to withstand blunt (concussions and lacerations) and penetrating (gunshot and stabbing) trauma. The spiderfiber in inlaid and molded to her torso, arms and thighs giving the suit distinct lines and a shade of frosted silver but spaced far enough to give her room to maneuver with ease. This however leaves open spaces in the leather around her joints. The entire suit can be shed by the zipper along the front of the uniform. Artemis wears military grade, flat soled black boots with a small blade hidden in the right heel that can be released by a trigger inside the toe of her boot. She wears a black leather utility belt that houses an assortment of goodies as well as a several small pouches sewn into the suit along her sides, lower back and right leg. A deceptively simple looking black domino mask conceals her identity.
PLAY BY : Sophie Marceau
AFFILIATION : Guardsmen
OCCUPATION : Sole proprietor of the Davon Shipyards in Brooklyn and fifth largest defense contractor in the world (largest in New York) under the private name Davon Enterprise. The main company building is in Manhattan with several corporate organizations around the world specializing in weaponry, ships and communications.
EQUIPMENT : The Davon Mansion is home to several exotic weapons and suits of armor from her father’s eclectic collection of Africa and the middle East. However only a few are ever carried on Artemis’ body and those that pass inspection are given a modern upgrade. On average her utility belt contains a small camera, two way radio by small earplugs, a tracer, handcuffs, a high grade of pepper spray, stun gun, flashlight, lock picking kit, small grenades (smoke, stun and regular) and shuriken in the shape of a crescent moon, a tie back to her younger years.
A grappling gun is kept separately at her waist with a 100 foot reach. Similar to bungee jumping cord, it is a invention of her Enterprise that is used in the military today. It is nearly 1/4 the width of a normal cording and 1,000 lb tested. When not in use it neatly folds into itself and stores the cording inside the handle. Artemis wears a leather quiver packed with titanium cast arrows, allowing for the lighter build and sharper impact and a top of the line forged titanium compound bow with a few modifications to better fit it’s owner. A quiet, vibration dampening center pivot allows for more energy to put into the arrow rather the bow and makes for longer ranges. It is custom fit to Artemis’s hand size and arm length and the unique carbon shaft string suppressor with stabilizer helps transfer the recoil and vibrating sting away from her hand. It is also outfitted with a LED iron sight. On occasion in place of her normal large weapons she carries a much smaller and easier to conceal recurve pistol crossbow. A different build then her main bow, the recurve allows for a greater acceleration and less hand shock. Broken down, it is easy to carry and assemble when needed. The simple black eye mask is actually a sophisticated piece of technology that allows the use of night vision goggles. Above the right eye is a small nondescript bump that is actually a button to activate the goggles. It is a personal pet project, one Artemis has not revealed to the public.
What’s a hero without wheels? Aetole uses a modified Lamborghini Cheetah after obtaining specs in the early 70’s before it made it’s public debut and demise. Named Arktos though often called Ben by Artemis, it is built for off road adventures. She and her chief mechanic reinforced the fiberglass body, added armored doors, bullet proof glass and ballistics windshield that still left room to seat five people including driver. Outfitted with a waterproof 5.9L rear mounted engine, independent suspension, titanium alloy all terrain puncture proof wheels, disk breaks and automatic transmission, the dune buggy looking vehicle was transformed into a fast moving powerhouse that could navigate the mean streets of New York, much different then it’s first incarnation. Packed with a front and back winch, it’s capable of pulling/moving a maximum load of 2,500 lbs. The vehicle is backed with nitrous tanks for an emergency boost but are hardly used as Arktos can reach up to 105 mph. Inside, Arktos is equipped with a radar for her tracers, police scanner, an onboard communications link back to her base of operations and home and a voice operated locking system allows for Aetole to leave it on the public street without worrying about it. Weapon wise, the vehicle is equipped with self protection of a low level electrical current that gives brazen carjackers a brief but painful shock. Smoke screens, oil slick dispenser and caltrops can be deployed from the back of Arktos like spike strips to puncture the tires of anyone chasing her. Stock piled with various weapons from the simple stun gun to the extreme M72 LAW, her when-shit-hits-the-fan last resort weapon. She keeps a extensive first aid kit, food and water rations, cash, a handgun and civilian clothes under the passenger seat for emergencies.
When Arktos is not needed, Artemis rides a gutted ’72 Honda CB750 motorcycle. Refusing to retire her classic in exchange for new toys, Artemis had it outfitted for street wear and like her main vehicle a few self defense mechanisms, electrical shock, smoke, oil and caltrops. Able to reach a top speed of 125 mph with easy maneuverability, high durability and excellent instrumentation. Artemis’ helmet has a communication link and police scanner built within it for hands free use. Back in her base of operations she keeps a large collection of her weapons, three different motorcycles in various stages of being built and a couple of civilian cars. She also has at her disposal, ski boats, sloop sail boat, a Bell 205B helicopter (which she paid a pretty penny for), private airplane and jet. All of her heroing gear and transportation is the color of gunmetal with a single white crescent moon tucked away on various corners.
PERSONALITY : Artemis has an strong and bold personality and this comes off a lot harsher then she intends. To the public eye she is a millionairess that is aloof, vague and unattainable. A part of New York City’s high society, the papers claim her prestigious and self important with a new boy toy at every new event she deems worthy enough to be apart. The media is more concerned on what she is wearing and socially doing and Artie plays the part with not so equal gusto. In reality, the woman is heartily down to earth who would be better suited in the simple but fantastic task of being a wife and mother. Instead she has taken on her family’s responsibilities and shouldered the business.
Her feelings remain quietly behind the hard veneer she has built up. It has become much easier to be the tough bitch people associate her to be. She is easily labeled as overbearing and demanding. Her employees when they actually see her describe her as a demanding mother. She wants the best out of everyone even if it means working late and hard. However she is not without understanding and rewards those that give their all. The Davon Enterprise employees are some of the highest paid in their fields in New York City. Unfortunately Artemis doesn’t know when to quit and have a free weekend. The phones are always ringing, there’s constantly something to finish and some crook to get his ass handed to him. She has a great deal of patience in her business and has learned to bait a prospective interest and what appears to be a retreat to others is her best tactic. As a woman of high power and society, feigning a touch of weakness sends the vultures circling. Her motto is a good defense is the best offense.
Like any person she dons a mask of dominant leader in society, she takes charge with efficiency and deliberation. When a order is given, there is no excuse great enough in her eyes and punishment is doled out like candy. The care of those beneath her are kept solid and well, it is her duty to watch over the young. She is intelligent and belligerent to a fault, confident and irritable. Fiercely loyal, she is perhaps a perfect example of her astrological sign. The maternal instinct within cannot turn her back and without keeping an eye on it, it can become tempered and smothering. As a result, Artemis has directed a lot of focus on various charities and donations, she even runs a foundation named Dianna’s Hope to help young mothers get on their feet and started in life.
Artemis is not without her faults. She hangs onto the past, refusing to completely let go. When her mother passed away a lot of bitterness of being forced into superheroing went unresolved. She has carried that resentment to this day and it remains a tug of war of both hating and fueling the compulsion that drives her. Without a mother figure, Artemis latched onto her beloved friend Winnifred and has remained especially close even throughout her marriage. The elder woman was her stability and role model, helping shape her into the woman she is today.
SKILLS : Artemis’ child and teen hood was spent being groomed to become a superhero. She was trained from the age of 5 on in varying martial arts, archery and weapon tactics on top of intensive schooling from general education to detective skills. Today, Artemis is a 5th dan (black belt) in Aikido and 7th in Kyudo having over 30 years invested in the Japanese arts. Aikido focuses on using an attackers movement against them and redirecting attacks with various throws and joint locks while Kyudo is the Japanese form of archery, introducing the idea of moral and spiritual development. A surveyor of her surroundings, she has trained herself to be aware of her environment and to have the patience to see it. Equally she was trained in her youth for hidden surveillance such as stakeouts and investigative skills. Artemis speaks Mandarin Chinese and Italian fluently with a smattering of Russian. She learned Greek as a child, but has since lost the majority of it. She may recognize a few words but has never furthered her studies on it.
Financially skilled, from the basics of opening a checking account to working with taxes, budgets and the IRA. Though her good friend and coworker Geoff handles these affairs, Artemis likes to keep on top of her personal ones. Once a week she goes over her businesses financial situations. Her medical knowledge is basic first aid, if something’s bleeding stop it, if someone’s unconscious seek out professional help. She isn’t one to try and be a hero in this department as her inexperience could only hamper the situation. A proud owner of an Eidetic (photographic) memory, she has the ability to recall images, sounds and objects in memory with extreme accuracy and in abundant volume. In essences, she remembers a lot of crap. As a child it came with ease but today, Artemis works to maintain a fraction of what she once had. Visuals are easier to remember but she focuses on sound mostly, people talking to the distinct difference between a pistol and rifle being loaded.
Knowledge of the criminal law and law governing arrests, search, seizures, warrants and evidence, interviewing and interrogation; one she is highly skilled at playing good cop/bad cop and practice and procedures of investigation. She has a pilot and boating license, both an avid sailor and pilot. A decent dancer, she can ballroom dance with the best but the more younger and hipper styles go over her head. In what little free time she has, Artemis enjoys rock climbing and poker. Leadership skills, no matter how rusty she is at it she has no problem taking over as leader and directing individuals. She uses a basic sense of negotiations when working and in her personal life, that goal is to come to a win-win scenario where everyone wins and walks away. She’s an adept mechanic in automobiles, aircrafts and military weapons, it comes with the day job as Artemis is very hands on. Many of her company projects go through her inspection and she enjoys working on various things alongside her employees. Computer technology while new, she has hands on experience with it and is working on it in her spare time.
STRENGTHS : Artemis considers her greatest strength is her getting out of superheroing at a young age. It gave her a chance to grow up and explore the world and get that out of her system before settling down. Physically she has excellent arm strength from her years of archery and works out at least once a day for an hour, focusing on maintaining rather then bulking up. Artemis’ gear allows her to take a somewhat easier route with crooks instead of beating them into submission. Her even temperedness with criminals alleviate some unnecessary violence and she’s quite proud she can bring in scum that’s still able to eat without the aid of a straw.
WEAKNESSES : Allergic to most perfumes known to man, thus skips out on wearing them. Reaction range from a slight itch to swelling and hives. Artemis cannot cook, while she is capable of boiling water and the simple things, don’t expect her to whip out gourmet meals. She tends to go easy on criminals, it’s just not in her to be vicious and cruel. Cannot say no, when something’s asked of her, she’ll finish it even she has to suffer a few days later with a run downed system and while some may consider this a weakness, the end result is always Artemis being hit by a cold/flu. Kept secret from the public, Artemis is unable to bear children, the injuries she received years ago damaged her extensively and every day is a reminder of the life she should have had.
RESIDENCE : Artemis has many homes around New York City but the most prominent and widely known is the Davon Mansion in Manhattan just outside the Carl Schurz Park. Situated on heavily guarded 10 acres of forest and gardens, the two story mansion has been in the family since 1899 after renovating it from a school. Artemis occupies a portion of the east wing and though she has given free reign to her staff, they reside in the servant’s quarters across the courtyard. The Davon homestead is capable of holding large banquets and the occasional ball but usually the unused areas of her mansion remain locked up. Built to have an openness about it, the high ceilings, curved wall arches and columns make the formal areas grand but comfortable. Upon entering through the foyer it sweeps slightly to the left to a cascading circular staircase. To the left is a formal drawing room with a fireplace, den and pool room with bar and to the right a spacious dinning hall, gymnasium and parlor. The grand salon is straight ahead and ornamented with another large fireplace and media area. It connects to the morning breakfast room and open kitchen. The conservatory and library are connected via the gallery and beyond the kitchen is a four car garage.
The second floor houses the master bedroom of her parents, it remains closed and off limit to staff and several smaller but large guest rooms. Artemis occupies her old room she had has a child where it overlooks the gardens. A neighboring bedroom was transformed into a personal office for her day job. The entire building has been outfitted with a security system and secret rooms and tunnels once used for staff to move about, they’ve been converted into safety measures should Artemis and her staff need to evacuate. The tunnels lead underground and separate to come up to various areas of the estate. One leads to the East River to a small dock where a motorboat is stored. Behind the main staircase is a second set of stairs that lead down to the basement where various foods, wines and things are stored including a laundry room.
However behind the second to last wine rack is a secret passageway behind a false wall that leads to her other work office underground. This addition is not in the blueprints of the mansion and uncommon knowledge except to three individuals. Broken into different rooms, Artemis’ base houses a separate garage for her heroing vehicles and storage rooms to store her extra gear, a basic laboratory and workshop, a library, gym, medical facilities and a docking area for her ski boat that leads via a underground waterway system to the East River. The base is also outfitted with a security system of motion detectors, alarms and steel mechanical doors that can be locked and in the case of a power outages a hydroelectric generator runs the base. Through the veranda accessible by various areas of the house, it overlooks the East River and opens into a courtyard with an expansive garden and Olympic size swimming pool.
Artemis has provided a penthouse and staff for her father when he retired at the age of 65. He resides in Manhattan close by where she makes sure to visit him at least twice a week. Nicolas’ suite is only accessible by a private elevator and occupies the entire top floor with a large library, living room with a fireplace, master bedroom, spa and two balconies. The kitchen is broken up into a breakfast room and third small glassed in balcony. Around the city, condo in downtown Manhattan, an apartment on Fifth Avenue near Madison Square Park, one in Queens and a cot in her shipping yard office. Artemis has a safe house in the Bronx that looks to be nothing more then a dilapidated apartment but the hidden security system keeps it in check. The apartment is outfitted with bullet proof windows and reinforced steel doors and houses various weapons, clothing, food and everything needed to hole up for a month.

HISTORY : Artemis’ history spans before she was born with her good father Nicolas. Coming from a strong lineage of financially sound businessmen and women, the Davon Enterprise was founded by Nicolas’ father Jonathan and blossomed into the immense company it is today. Nicolas took over the business in his early twenties and married young to a eccentric and vibrant girl named Dianna. They met through their fathers, Dianna’s worked as a developmental engineer and it was during a Christmas party. From then on the two were attached at the hip, Di acted as Nicolas’ balance while he was her line to reality. They married in the fall of ’37 and though it rained on their ceremony, it was perfect nonetheless and Artemis was born two years into their marriage.
Dianna had always had a interest in the Roman and Greek mythology, stemming from her mother’s own interests as a librarian. She grew up on various fairy tales of warriors and princesses and somewhere in her youth, she meshed them together. When the first masked criminals started showing up, it stirred the woman and though she had a child at home she joined the Guardsmen at the age of 29, using her adolescent years of archery at her disposal, becoming Aetole. Aetole was a surname of the Greek goddess Artemis and worshiped in Naupactus and while Dianna bore a bow and arrow she was also known for carrying a bow staff in representation of the infamous javelin. During the years, she even encouraged her daughter, a mere toddler at the time to become interested in her work. She remained with the Guardsmen up until they disbanded in ’47 much to the relief of her husband.
Nicolas could never say no to Dianna, her oddities were what attracted him and in order to appease her, he let her have anything she wanted and little by little he retreated further into his enterprise, focusing his attention on expanding the business. Dianna’s love of superheroing never waned and with her husband’s supposed acceptance she turned her attentions to her daughter in hope of the team resurrecting. From little on Artemis was pushed into private tutors and schooling, absorbing her childhood into endless hours of normal schooling piled atop of martial arts training, language courses, criminal law and the most important, archery. When she was sent on various excursions and schooling around the world, it was Winnifred, Artemis’ nanny that accompanied the youngster.
Artemis joined the second Guardsmen in 1956, she was a mere 17 years old and following in her mother footsteps, she took on her previous codename Aetole. As one of the younger members, she was often forgotten about or placed on base duty. Her mother sacrificed to give her daughter everything but as the months and eventually years wore on, she began to resent it. An lifetime spent to guard an empty base that no one knew about. However, the youngster had racked a few missions under her belt and like her mother, she clung to that little taste.
When her mother passed away at the age of 44 from lung cancer of over 25 years of smoking, Artemis retired from the Guardsmen at 19 years of age. She hung up her costume and gear and attempted to start a regular life. With her father’s blessing, she went to public school and traveled around the world, visiting exotic and unknown destinations to prove to she was just a regular person. Through this, she was able to work through her insecurities, restlessness of being pushed into one mold and a whole lot of growing up.
She returned home at the age of 25 when her father needed her. She was in Athens when she received a call that her father had suffered a mild stroke. After the death of his wife, Nicolas threw everything into work as a means of distraction and 80 plus work weeks caught up to him. He spent several weeks in the hospital recuperating and when he was released, Artemis set up a penthouse for him in downtown Manhattan to recover and with the help of her good friend Geoff she took over the family. Over the years father and daughter worked on their little family and reestablished broken ties and like a bird, once she realized she could leave the gilded cage any time she wanted to, the family business was where she truly belonged. It was also where she met her husband.
Like her father, Artemis met Richard Warfield through a work Christmas party and dated on and off until they finally tied the knot two years later. It was a simple love, one the media had a field day with but Rich was her tie to the real world, he made her ditch work on weekends, cut hours back and was the calm to her storm and when she became pregnant, the woman realized she needed to change her life. Much like her father, she let the business consume her and with a baby on the way, she took a much needed step back and allowed Geoff to take over more of her business. Sadly, Richard’s brother did not share the little family’s happiness.
Seven years younger then his brother, Francis had always been overshadowed by Richard throughout their childhood leading up to their adult lives. Richard was the one to get the prime colleges, the perfect job, everything Francis wanted. In an effort to bring his status up he gambled, unfortunately he was lousy at it and racked up a immense debt. When his brother married Artemis, he often looked for a handout. A thousand here, five thousand there until it became too much and Richard cut his ties. His brother vanished for a couple of weeks afterwards but like always, he showed up at their home and in a drunken state demanded to speak to his brother. Richard went out to meet him and send him away before the condo’s security took him to jail. Francis begged his brother for money and when Richard didn’t agree, he flew into a drunken rage. By that time, a very pregnant Artemis had gone downstairs to check on her husband and came upon Francis standing over Richard covered in blood. When she turned to flee, her brother in law in a state of panic and disbelief chased after her with the pocket knife he had stabbed his brother with and tackled the woman before she could call out for help.
He stabbed her multiple times before he was torn off by Geoff that had come by to drop off a box of folders for Art to look over. Security intervened and Artemis and Richard were rushed to the hospital; sadly Richard perished in the ambulance. Artemis was rushed into emergency surgery when the strain of her injuries sent into her pre labor. She died twice on the operating table while the doctors rushed to save mother and child but the irrefutable damage proved to be too much and Artemis lost her baby. She spent two weeks in intensive care before being moved to a private wing and recovered. When she was well enough to leave the hospital, she took the stand against her brother in law and it was with her testimony that sent him to prison.
Artemis went through a dark depression and for months blamed herself. Her husband had known nothing of her superheroing days and she spent nights replaying the scene in her head on things might have gone different. She moved back into her childhood home under the watchful eye of her father and childhood nanny Winnifred and would have remained curled away from the world if it hadn’t been for the prodding of her friends and family. In order to distract herself, she picked up her archery she set aside when she married and from there delved back into Aikido and slowly but surely she returned to working.
When her father could no longer keep up with the business, it was passed onto his daughter and he retired at the age of 65. Artemis had little trouble taking over and focused on the family shipping yards to bring the otherwise forgotten commodity up to par. It helped expand the Davon Enterprise and opened up new possibilities of military water craft. It was then she came across her mother’s old crude drawings of superhero weaponry and vehicles, while most of it seemed befitting a child’s dream, it spurred Artemis’ memory of the old days of costumed people running around.
Over the years, Artemis’ shipyard have been exploited by various crimes and though the local police had done all they could, it wasn’t enough in the woman’s eyes and in the last ten years, she has spent private resources and funding to rebuild her mother’s old dream. She’d call it a madness, but the unjustness of her brother in law’s early parole for good behavior and psychiatric help as it was stated, pushed her hard to return to the spotlight of heroing. It wasn’t enough in her eyes and if no one else was going to do something about it, then she would. Her safety was neither she nor her mother ever revealed their identities to their fellow Guardsmen and for all intended purposes, Aetole simply vanished. Artemis has started to look for her fellow masks in an attempt to rebuild a better adaptation and restore their once good name.
