The leaves from neighboring house's trees were being swept around by the wind. They fluttered and swayed like a woman's skirt as she danced across a ballroom. Annabel, with her satchel slung over her back and a paper bag in each arm, smiled as several children ran by, their voices chiming happily. They were not yet in costume, but as the witching hour approached many costumed kids would soon cover Annabel's neighborhood.
While she was religious, Annabel did not see Halloween as a wicked holiday. Her father and mother did, and she had childhood memories of watching Trick-or-Treaters scatter in their neighborhood from the upstairs window. Once she was out of the house, Annabel relished the opportunity to finally participate in the holiday.
She set her paper bags down on her porch while she opened the door to her home. She scooted the bags inside before following them. She pulled off her princess coat and scarf and hung them on the rack next to the door. Danny came out and greeted her with a rub between the legs and a meow. "I'll feed you in a second, Danny, just hold on." She picked the paper bags up and headed to the kitchen.
The first paper bag was filled with Tootsie-Pops, toothbrushes, and apples. There was a batch of individually wrapped homemade caramels that Annabel planned to hand out as well. In the other bag was two pumpkins, one slightly squatter than the other. She spread old editions of the Mirror on the table like a tablecloth. Annabel then set the pumpkins on the table, along with a some knives of various lengths and sizes, and the large bowl she used for shelling peas. She clapped her hands together and went to the pantry for Danny's food. When Edward showed up, things were certainly going to be fun.
